DESCRIPTION:Memorial Day Weekend May 23-26th \n\n\nIn 2016\, Operation Stand Down RI launched the Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial which now displays over 7\,000 combat boots adorned with flags and placards. Each boot represents a U.S. service member killed in action post 9-11 in the Global War on Terror. \nThe placard attached to each boot displays the name and photo of the fallen along with biographical information\, military branch\, rank and circumstances of death. The Memorial is updated yearly to incorporate additional U.S. service members killed in the ongoing Global War on Terror. \nThe boots\, each adorned with a name placard and flag are organized alphabetically and by state and U.S. territories. This layout enables individuals with a personal connection to easily find a specific fallen hero’s boot. Often\, family\, friends\, and comrades can be seen quietly paying their respects\, sometimes leaving mementos. Since its inception\, thousands of visitors from across the U.S. have attended the Boots on the Ground for Heroes display\, held on Memorial Day Weekend and other times throughout the year. \nFor its first three years\, the memorial was situated at Roger Williams Park in Providence. Since 2019\, it has been displayed at Fort Adams State Park in Newport\, one of the country’s oldest military posts\, where we continue to set it up annually. \nIn 2023\, we also had the honor of displaying the Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro\, MA\, over Veterans Day Weekend. This year\, we are again back at Fort Adams\, continuing the tradition of honoring our heroes. \n\n\n\nThe hours are as follows: \nFriday\, May 23rd: 9AM – 7PM \nSaturday\, May 24th: 9AM – 7PM \nSunday\, May 25th: 9AM – 7PM \nMonday\, May 26th: 9AM – 6PM (Memorial Day) \nAdmission is free for all attendees. \nThe 2025 Veterans Day display of the Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial at Fort Adams is made possible by AMGEN\, The Tilley Family\, Seasons Corner Market\, Cardi’s Furniture & Mattresses\, Corvias and IGT.

Bavaria meets the Ocean State inside the walls of historic Fort Adams where attendees will be able to enjoy authentic German beer\, wine\, food\, and live music. \nThis 21+ event is a fundraising event for the Fort Adams Trust. \nTickets\nNewport Oktoberfest tickets include entry to the festival from 1:00 to 6:30 PM and a commemorative stein glass to be used for beer sampling throughout the afternoon. The first beer is included in the ticket price\, with additional beers available for purchase as you go. \nDesignated driver tickets include entry to the festival and a glass upon exiting the festival. You do not need to be a Veteran to attend this free event! \nThe below information is from Military Veterans Advocacy: https://www.militaryveteransadvocacy.org/2024veteransgetoutsideday.html \n– \nMilitary Veterans Advocacy (MVA) will host the Second Annual Veterans Get Outside Day at Ft. Adams\, Newport\, Rhode Island June 9\, 2024. This is the second year for the event that connects Veterans with resources and encourages outdoor activities to improve mental health. You do not need to be a Veteran to attend this free event. \nOne of MVA’s issues of concern is the Veteran suicide rate. It is no secret that suicide claims far too many people. For military veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) they are at an even greater risk of depression\, unclear thinking\, and suicide. In 2021\, the most recent data available\, nearly 6\,400 Veterans took their lives. Of the 48\,183 Americans who died from suicide in 2021\, 13% were Veterans. Since Veterans make up about 6% of the U.S. Adult population\, this is significant. Sixty-two percent of Veteran suicides were among those who had not received VA healthcare services in the previous two years. They may not even be aware of the resources available. \nStudies have shown that individuals who spend time outdoors in natural settings\, whether they are doing sports or other activities\, have a better outlook on life. It is hoped that this event will encourage Veterans and others that may be struggling to find an activity or resources that will excite them about spending more time outside and enjoy life.
