Fort Adams Executive Director Job Description

Fort Adams (the “Fort”) was originally established in 1799 as a United States Army post and expanded further in 1824 to encompass the buildings we currently care for today. The Fort Adams Trust (“FAT”) was established in 1994 to preserve the Fort and all its encompassing structures in partnership with the state of Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (“DEM”) who manages the state park and the Fort’s governing body, The Fort Adams Foundation. Fort Adams State Park is a popular destination in Newport, RI for locals and tourists. The Fort hosts many public and private events throughout the year. Historic Fort Adams is operated by the FAT, a 501(c)(3) Non-profit with a mission to protect and promote the historic places and public spaces at the gateway to Narragansett Bay and Newport. This includes directing and supporting the stabilization, maintenance, and operation of the Fort as a public historic site. The FAT Staff & Board are excited to hire a new Executive Director to lead this amazing Fort.

General Overview of Executive Director Position:

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will be a full-time employee of the FAT and will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for the Fort’s staff, programs, development, expansion, and execution of its mission. The ED will be responsible for the development of the short/long term strategic plan, fundraising and communication efforts, partnerships and business plan, day-to-day operations, and all ongoing efforts/events at the Fort.

Objectives of Executive Director Position:

  • To preserve, protect and promote the Fort
  • Raise positive awareness of the FAT mission and objectives
  • Establish, promote and ensure efforts to provide financial security and growth
  • Develop, lead and maintain the Fort’s strategic plan for long term success.
  • Primary spokesperson for the organization to increase awareness of FAT.
  • Manage daily operations of FAT, including staff, volunteers, events & programs, fundraising, monthly cash flow, etc.
  • Work closely with FAT’s Board, sub-committees, and partners to address opportunities and issues with FAT.
  • Identify proper staffing requirements for efficient operations and maintain a strong work culture to retain quality employees.
  • Comply with all legal requirements such as State and local laws, conflict of interest, contracts etc.

Responsibilities of Executive Director:

  • The ED is a representative of the FAT in the community. This is an outward facing (as well as inward) role that will require community engagement, relationships, and representation.
  • Create an annual budget with assistance from the Board and achieve these goals by reviewing financials monthly.
  • Review FAT endowment annually with a third-party foundation along with a finance
  • Identify and lead all fundraising, individual and corporate donor, sponsorship, government funding and grant opportunities in partnership with the Board of Directors.
  • Develop strategic partners to increase awareness, expand programming, and create visibility in the community.
  • Oversee all marketing, internal/external communications such as social media, newsletter, and website.
  • Develop and manage effective staff that is dedicated to fulfilling the mission of FAT. This will include semi-annual staff meetings, one of which is a formal review. The objective is to have a positive culture within the organization. Work with staff to develop areas of growth and mentorship in support of FAT objectives.
  • Other duties may be required from time to time at the request of the Board of Directors.

Required skills and qualifications of Executive Director:

  • Experience in an Executive Director, leadership, or management role, preferably with a non-profit organization.
  • Proven success working with a board of directors.
  • Experience communicating and representing an organization or institution in the community and to the media.
  • Strong experience in marketing, fundraising, grant writing, and public relations.
  • Team leader for staff members and a leader out in the community.
  • Entrepreneurial mentality for business/strategic planning.
  • Bachelor’s degree in history, business, or similar field.
  • Experience in managing budgets.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
